Professor Aliyu Usman El-Nafaty, MBBCH, FWACS, FICS, OFR.

Vice Chancellor, Gombe State University

A Professor of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and a proud graduate of the University of Jos in 1984. He was born in Nafada town, Gombe State on 25th December, 1960. Prof. Elnafaty obtained the Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons in 1994, and was Conferred with the Fellowship of International College of Surgeons. Professor El-Nafaty's area of specialty is Materno-Fetal Medicine. The Vice Chancellor also co-authored the Book titled: Early Detection and Management of Pre-Eclampsia/Eclampsia for Health Workers in Developing Countries. In addition, he also Published many Journal Articles on the same subject. He also won the prestigious John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Research Grant on Leadership Development in 1996. Prof. El-Nafaty worked with University of Maiduguri from 1989 as a Lecturer, and was Promoted through the ranks to a Professor. He later joined the services of Gombe State University in 2015. While, with the University, he served as the Deputy Provost, Ag. Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University, before becoming the Vice Chancellor in October, 2019. Other past Executive positions held by Prof. Elnafaty include: Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre Gombe (2002-2010), which was later renamed as the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe. During his tenure the Hospital was transformed to an efficient and robust Health Service delivery Centre that won the Prestigious Ministerial Prize of Honor as the best Medical Centre in the Federation by 2007. Also, to cap his successful career as a vibrant and dynamic leader, academic and administrator, on the 11th October, 2022 he was conferred with the honor of the Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (OFR) by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR. Prof. El-nafaty is proudly and happily married with children.
