The Department of Accounting, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Gombe State University is one of the pioneer departments in the University. It was first overseen by Professor Sani Abba Aliyu and then headed by Professor S. K. Msheliza, Professor Muhammad Mainoma, Professor J. W. D. Somasundara, Professor Ekoja B. Ekoja, Professor Ahmed Bawa and Mallam Abdullahi Muhammad Jikan-Jatum. The Department is currently under the headship of Dr. Hauwa Saidu.
The Department started with few resident and visiting lecturers with first set of twenty four students and now enjoys the luxury of more than twenty (20) resident lecturers and two (2) visiting lecturers with about 550 students in levels 100 to 400 for 2022/2023 session.
The Department currently offers B.Sc. Accounting programmes (both on Full and Part time bases), an affiliated programme of B.Sc. Banking and Finance and three postgraduate programmes namely: Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting and Finance (PGDAF), Master of Accounting (MAcc) and M.Sc. Accounting and PhD Accounting. The Department started graduating students in 2009 and so far it has graduated more than 1000 students at the undergraduate level. The Department enjoys both the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants’ (ICAN) full accreditations. The department wishes to introduce B.Sc. Taxation programme in the very nearest future.
The Department’s programmes are structured in such a way that our students will appreciate both the theory and practice of accounting with particular emphasis on the NUC benchmark and the syllabuses of the relevant professional bodies. This makes it possible for the graduates of the department to sit and pass the relevant professional examinations within record times. More than 10 graduates of the department are qualified chartered accountants (ACAs) and more than 30 are Certified National Accountants (CNAs). The Department is blessed with young, dynamic, intelligent and vibrant members of staff who received their training at home and abroad. The Department has a dedicated well equipped computer laboratory for teaching students accounting software. At present, the students’ population of the Department stands at more than eight hundred (at the Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels).
MISSION
The mission of the Department of Accounting is to produce graduates that are academically, professionally and morally sound. The Department also intends to educate public and private functionaries with up to date knowledge and capacity to apply the latest methods in Accounting and Finance. Furthermore, the Department intends to lead in sustenance of high standards of best ethical practices that will improve the quality of accounting services and ensure viability of business and governance.
VISION
Our vision as a Department is that; by the year 2025, our products would have excelled in accounting practice locally and internationally. We also intend to evolve by the same time frame, an enviable structure of knowledge in the application of sound and modern accounting and finance techniques.
