ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Educational Foundations was created in September 2019 as an important branch of the Faculty of Education concerned with the scientific study of teaching and learning processes. The major driving force of this Department is to reinforce teaching and learning and the improvement of these methods.

The Department is a strong support pillar that runs all the foundation courses in the Faculty at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels. It also offers the following Postgraduate Programmes: Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE); M. Ed Guidance and Counselling, M.Ed. Educational Psychology, Ph.D Guidance and Counselling and Ph.D. Educational Psychology.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

General admission requirements for the Postgraduate Programmes in the Department of Educational Foundations are as follows:

1. PhD. Educational Psychology.

I. Applicants must obtain a Master Degree in Educational Psychology or any related discipline with an approved CGPA from Gombe State University or any other recognized University.
II. Applicants must have a Bachelor’s Degree Honors in education obtained at not less than second class lower division from Gombe State University or any other recognized University. Candidates with a 3rd Class Bachelor’s Degree plus PGDE may be considered or Higher National Diploma (HND) holders provided that such applicants possess postgraduate Diploma in Education obtained at not less than credit level.

2. PhD Guidance and Counselling

i. Applicants must obtain a Masters’ Degree in Guidance and Counselling or any related discipline with an approved CGPA from Gombe State University or any other recognized University.
ii. Applicants must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Education obtained at not less than Second Class Lower Division from Gombe State University or any other recognized University. Candidates with a 3rd Class Bachelor’s Degree plus PGDE may be considered and Higher National Diploma (HND) holders may be considered provided that such applicants possess Postgraduate Diploma in Education obtained at not less than credit level.

3. M.Ed. Educational Psychology

i. Applicants with Bachelor’s Degree Honors in Education obtained at not less than second class lower division from Gombe State University or any other recognized University.
ii. Candidates with a Bachelor’s Degree plus PGDE may be considered. Applicants with a Third class Honors Degree with PGDE at Credit Level or Higher National Diploma (HND) holders provided that such applicants possess Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) obtained at not less than credit level.

4. M Ed Guidance and Counselling

i. Applicants with Bachelor’s Degree in Education obtained at not less than Second Class Lower Division from Gombe State University or any other recognized University.
ii. Candidate with a Bachelor’s Degree plus PGDE may be considered. Applicants with a Third class Honors Degree with PGDE at Credit Level or Higher National Diploma (HND) holders provided that such applicants possess Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) obtained at not less than credit level.

5. Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE)

To be considered for admission, all prospective candidates must have a minimum of Bachelor’s degree or HND at Credit level.

Graduation Requirements

To qualify for the award of the degrees mentioned above, candidates shall satisfy the following conditions:
i. Must have been duly admitted for a Degree/Diploma programme in the Department.
ii. Must have been duly matriculated into the University.
iii. Must have paid all required fees and debts.
iv. Must have passed all prescribed core, electives and general (GENS) courses.
v. Must have earned a minimum Total Credits Units Earned (TCUE) of not less than 18 Credit Units at Ph. D; 30 credit units at Masters level; and 39 units at PGDE respectively.
vi. Must not have stayed longer than prescribed maximum period of study for the degree programme.
