About the Department

The Department of Sociology in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences was one of the 25 Departments of the Gombe State University created in 2005. The programme started in the 2005/2006 academic year. The first batch of Students (28) admitted at the 100 level graduated in the 2008/2009 academic year. Since then, student enrolment in the proramme has been increasing steadily. Presently, there are more than six hundred PG and Undergraduate students in the Department. The staffing situation has been growing over the years as well. Staff composition in terms of area of specialization, teaching and research interest is diverse. This diversity enables the Department to have a wide range of national and international sociological experiences drawn from Kano, Zaria, Sokoto, Maiduguri, Nnsuka, UK, USA, Srilanka and Ghana. Many staff members have distinguished themselves nationally and internationally through research, publications and membership in professional associations.

Vision

To train and graduate students with sound, critical and independent mindsets. To graduate students who are ready and capable of facing the challenges of a fast changing society.

Mission

To teach and conduct research in all areas of specialization in Sociology and other areas relevant to the needs and yearnings of Gombe State. To also contribute to the growth and development of Gombe State in particular and Nigeria in general
