About Geology Department

Geology was one of the disciplines planned for the Faculty of Science in the Phase 1 of development of academic programmes of the Gombe State University, which commenced in 2005/2006 session. The Department was established as one of the basic academic programmes that will form the foundation for future academic development in the institution, and is presently operating a programme for the award of B.Sc. in Geology. The Department of Geology took off in the 2005/2006 session, under the Faculty of Science to run a four-year Degree Programme with an initial intake of ten (10) students. The Department staff strength as at 2018/2019 is made up of twenty Seven (27) academic staff comprising of five (5) Professors, Six (6) senior Lecturers, Six (6) Lecturer I, Six (6) Lecturer II, one (3) Assistant Lecturer and two (1) graduate Assistance; with four (4) non academic staff with students population of about two hundred and fifty (250) as at 2018/2019 session. Currently the department is headed by Dr. Tabale Raymond Peter.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Admission into Geology Programme can be general admission requirements entry; (1) For UTME, In addition to the General admission requirements of the University, candidates must possess credit at WAEC/SSCE/NECO in at least five subjects including English language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology or Geography. (2) For Direct entry, candidates must satisfy the requirements set out in (1) above. In addition, candidates must have credit passes in the GCE Advanced level, IJMB or equivalent in at least two subjects, one of which must be Geology and either Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Geography, the passes in the two subjects must be in one sitting. (3) For Inter University transfer, In addition to the requirements in either (1) or (2) above, the candidates must have a CGPA of not less than 2.0 points.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

At the end of the programme the successfully candidates must have spent either four years (from UTME) or three years (from DE) in the Department and having satisfied the minimum unit requirements and found worthy both in learning and character would be awarded a bachelor of science (B.Sc.) in Geology of the Gombe State University. To qualify for the award of B.Sc. degree in Geology, a students must; (1) Have approved University admission and graduation requirements. (2) Satisfactorily complete and pass all the core/compulsory courses, all approved general courses and all registered elective courses. For graduation, a students must pass a minimum total of 159 credit units for UME candidates and 124 credit Units for Direct Entry candidates.
