DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL PATHOLOGY
The Department of Chemical Pathology is one of the clinical departments of the College of Medical Sciences of the Gombe State University, and serves the university and community in four interconnected areas:
1. Teaching of undergraduate medical students and postgraduate resident doctors.
2. Research and Scientific activities
3. Community services
4. Diagnostic and Clinical Chemistry services.
The undergraduate course of study in Chemical Pathology at Gombe State University is part of the MBBS curriculum approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), and is designed to highlight the central role in which abnormalities of biochemical and metabolic functions of cells, tissues and organs play in the prevention/screening, diagnosis, management and prognosis of disease states. It also teaches how these abnormalities of biochemical and metabolic functions may be recognized by performing relevant tests (measurements of components of biological fluids, tissues or organs). There is emphasis on the need to interpret results of such tests, in the context of the overall clinical picture in individual patients.
The department is accredited by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) along with the other Pathology departments for postgraduate residency training in Pathology and other Clinical departments.
In addition, it provides instructional courses to undergraduate and diploma students on industrial training. The research interest of members of academic staff in the Department has focused on toxicology, metabolic and endocrine disorders.
The Department provides a wide range of high quality analytical services for screening, diagnosis and monitoring of patients at the Federal Teaching
Hospital, Gombe, with comprehensive pre- and post-analytical consultation and Interpretation of results.
