ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCE EDUCATION

The Department of Science Education was carved out of the defunct Department of Education of the Faculty of Education in September 2019. The Head of the Department is Mary Erasmus Sulai Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Science Education. She obtained a B.Sc. (Ed) Biology from University of Maiduguri, M. Ed (Sci Ed.) from University of Jos and Ph.D. (Sci. Ed) from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi. She published a lot of Journal articles and books in Science Education and she received numerous meritorious awards at state and National level, for her dedication to work and outstanding performance. She is currently the Head of department of Science Education, Faculty of Education, Gombe State University, Nigeria.

The Department of Science Education offers a comprehensive study programme aimed at producing competent teachers primarily to teach relevant science subjects at the secondary school level of the educational system. Also, the Department provides advanced specialized training to researchers in Science Education. The basic objective of the Department of Science Education is to train Science teachers who are both academically and professionally competent to educate learners basically in the sciences.

All programmes in the Department of Science Education are geared towards enhancing the employability of graduates in a wide array of sectors including but not limited to all sectors of the educational system (both public and private), public examination bodies, industries related to content areas of specialization, and entrepreneurship ventures.

Admission Requirements

The general admission requirements for all degree programmes in science education department are as follows:

i. For admissions into 100 level ( through UTME), candidates must have:
- Five (5) credit passes at SSCE (or equivalent) in relevant subjects including English language and Mathematics at not more than two sittings; and
- An acceptable score in UTME in relevant subjects.
ii. For admission to 200 level (through Direct Entry), candidates must, in addition to five SSCE credit passes as in (i) above, obtain NCE in relevant subjects.

Admission Requirements into the B.Sc. (Ed.) (Hons) Biology programme

U.T.M.E Applicants

For admission into the 100 level, candidates must have
i. a satisfactory score in the JAMB/UTME exams
ii. at least five credits in relevant
WAEC/NECO/NABTEB Senior School level subjects or equivalent in relevant subjects including English language and Mathematics at not more than two sittings.

University’s School of Basic and Remedial Studies Applicants

Applicants seeking admissions into the 100 level through the University’s School of Basic and Remedial Studies must satisfy all the conditions in A above.

Direct Entry Applicants:

Direct entry candidates must have
i. 5 Credit passes at the SSCE level at not more than two sittings as stated in A above.
ii. Credit/merit passes in at least two relevant subjects at the NCE, one of which must be in the teaching subject.

Graduation Requirements

To qualify for the award of B.Sc. (Ed) (Hons) degree of the University, candidates shall satisfy the following conditions:
i. Must have been duly admitted for a degree programme in education
ii. Must have been duly matriculated into the University.
iii. Must have paid all required fees and debts.
iv. Must have passed all prescribed core, electives and general (GENS) courses.
v. Must have earned a minimum Total Credits Earned (TCUE) of not less than 140 if admitted through UTME and 120 if admitted through Direct Entry
vi. Must have a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of not less than 1.50
vii. Must not have stayed longer than the prescribed maximum period of study for the degree programme.
