ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF BIOCHEMISTRY
Biochemistry Department has programmes designed to enable acquisition of knowledge on chemical processes in living organisms ranging from single to multi- cellular organisms, it encompasses biological sciences, agricultural sciences, medical and pharmaceutical sciences as well as aspects of engineering and computational sciences.
The Department of Biochemistry has a modest beginning starting as a programme under Biological sciences in 2009 with the desire to produce BSc. Biochemistry graduates and satisfy the needs of the College of Medical Sciences of Gombe State University. The Department has grown remarkably both in number of staff and students; currently it has a total number of 20 permanent (academic and non-academic) and visiting (academic) staff and 600 undergraduate students admitted into both B.Sc Biochemistry and the recently NUC approved B.Sc Biotechnology programme. The Department has well- equipped and standard laboratories that accommodates both teaching and research needs in these fields and other related fields.
There is the Nigerian Society of Biochemistry Students (NSBS) which was formed and registered with the University in the year 2013 and each student of the Department is to register with this Association as a Member. The Association is saddled with the responsibility of giving orientation to newly admitted students and overseeing the overall interest of the students of Biochemistry Department.
In 2019, the Department received approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to start its postgraduate courses of PGD, MSc and PhD. In 2023, the department graduated its first set of M.Sc and PGD students.
OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME
The Objectives of the programme are as follows:
I. To provide students with comprehensive knowledge and skills in all aspects of modern Biochemistry and Biotechnology.
II. To stimulate the students’ minds to appreciate Biochemistry and Biotechnology and their application in various facets of life as well as fit in to any multidisciplinary research/work teams
III. To sharpen the students’ abilities to define and solve biochemical and biotechnological problems
IV. To inculcate in the students, knowledge, skills and attitude that will meet the needs of end-users in any working environment.
V. To provide students with solid foundation in Biochemistry and Biotechnology that will enable them to competitively further their studies in any other field that utilizes that basic knowledge.
VISION
The vision of the department is to be a world class generator and disseminator of functional biochemical and biotechnological knowledge.
MISSION
Our mission is to be a centre of excellence that generates quality graduates and research output relevant to the needs of our society.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
For admission to study B.Sc. Biochemistry and BSc. Biotechnology, students must satisfy the minimum requirement of O-level credit passes at in Chemistry, Biology, Physics, English and Mathematics in not more than two sittings. This is in addition to an acceptable pass in UTME and screening test set by the university.
For direct entry, a prospective candidate must satisfy the O-level requirements stated above in addition to at least two A- level passes (or equivalent) in subjects that must include Chemistry and Biology.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
For a student starting at 100 levels to graduate he/she has to earn at least a total of 166 credit units. ii. For a Direct Entry (DE) student to graduate he/she has to earn at least a total of 121 credit units.
STRUCTURE AND DURATION
The Duration of B. Sc. (Hons) Biochemistry programme is four years except for Direct Entry students for whom it is three years. There are two semesters of formal University studies in each academic session. At 300 level, a student is expected to go for 6-month Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) after completion of the first semester courses at the end of which he/she has to write, present and defend a report on what he/she did or learnt in the industry. At 400 levels, students undertake a research project in any field of interest with applications of Biochemistry, besides the usual prescribed courses.
