About Physics Department
The Department of Physics, under the Faculty of Science, came into existence with the establishment of Gombe State University in October 2005. It is one of the pioneer Departments in the Faculty of Science. Lectures commenced in the Department in October 2005 with one Assistant Lecturer (Hankouraou, Seydou) and one Graduate Assistant (M. L. Madugu). Dr. L. N. Singh from India joined the Department as an Associate Professor in 2006. He was appointed the first Head of Department. Later on Prof. A. N. Singh has joined the Department as the Head up to 2009. He was replaced by Dr. E.N. Chifu as acting Head up to 2012. From 2012 to 2014 the Department was Head by Prof. I. M. Umar, by Prof. Osita C. Meludu from 2014 to 2015. Currently the Department is being headed by Dr. Hankouraou Seydou from 2015 to date. From this modest beginning, the staff strength has grown in number and quality over the years.
The Department will teach and pursue research over a wide range of topics, starting from the abstract and fundamental to the practical and applied. The main focus of the Department will be studies in Pure Physics as this plays an important role at the fundamental end of the range for the exploitation of new discoveries.
Presently the Department offers four years degree programme leading to the award of B.Sc. (Hons) Physics Degree, two years Master Degree programme and three years PhD programme. There are two semesters in each academic session. The undergraduate programme includes an industrial training programme for 6 months during the Second Semester at 300 levels under the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES). At 400 level students undertake a one year project (both semesters) and a semester seminar in the first semester on different aspects of Physics under the supervision of an Academic Staff.
